Description
Mary Gaitskill brings her legendary unflinching examination of human behavior to a contemporary #MeToo moment in this powerful short fiction. Through alternating voices, she traces the unraveling of Quin, a charming and successful New York book editor, when multiple women accuse him of inappropriate conduct—revealing him as a complex figure whose capacity for both harm and genuine support coexist within the same person. Margot, his longtime friend and an older woman grappling with the nuances of the younger women's accusations, becomes the emotional center of this remarkable exploration of complicity, friendship, and moral ambiguity. Rather than offering easy answers, Gaitskill insists on the messy, contradictory reality of human nature, asking readers to hold space for uncomfortable truths and the possibility of understanding people even when we cannot excuse their actions. This is a work of profound humanity from one of contemporary literature's most incisive voices.
