⭐ 5/5

When I first picked up The Change, I almost didn’t read it. Some of the reviews were so harsh I was ready to walk away. But then I remembered how much I had loved another book by Kirsten Miller, and I thought, why not give this one a chance? I’m so glad I did. This book didn’t just meet my expectations, it reminded me why I love reading in the first place.

What struck me most was how deeply human these women felt. Miller captures the struggles women face at every stage, showing how our bodies, though ours, are so often out of our control. Whether it’s menstruation or menopause, there are battles we can’t “win,” only learn to embrace without guilt or shame. Harriett especially stayed with me. The way she lives - unapologetically herself, unafraid of judgment, made me wish I could be more like her: no apologies, no holding back, no pretending, no fucks given.

I’ve seen people call this book “man-hating,” and honestly, I don’t understand it. Did we even read the same thing? Or are some just refusing to acknowledge the reality we live in? To me, this wasn’t about hate at all, it was about truth, justice, and the courage to face what so many would rather ignore. And it’s worth saying: there are good men in this story too, men who remind us of what humanity at its best can look like.

This book made me feel angry, seen, hopeful, and inspired all at once. When I finished it, I found myself wishing more stories like this existed. The Change is powerful, raw, and unforgettable. I know I’ll carry Harriett, Jo, and Nessa with me for a long, long time.
