Description

A young woman’s life is transformed when she is drawn into the orbit of an enigmatic, formidable older woman named Abigail. As their relationship deepens, the story moves between intimate domestic moments and larger questions of faith, morality, and the cost of survival—revealing how the past can shape the present in ways both tender and unsettling. With a keen psychological eye and a spare, luminous style, Magda Szabó explores the boundaries between devotion and independence, trust and misunderstanding, and what it means to remain human under pressure. Blending realism with moral intensity, this novel offers a compelling portrait of resilience, memory, and the quiet power of truth.

Eva Ibbotson meets Mallory Towers meets World War 2 Hungary; I wish I had read this aged 12, it would have become a favourite.
