Description
In nineteenth-century Bulgaria, a charismatic “vampire slayer” arrives in one ruined village after another, staging terrifying spectacles that turn fear into currency—until she crosses paths with Anka, a headstrong orphan blamed for the community’s suffering. As illness and misfortune tighten around Koprivici and the village Captain begins to control Anka’s future, the two women form a desperate alliance: to create a monster so convincing it can become both protection and a path to freedom. Drawing on Slavic folklore, the novel blends Gothic dread with witchcraft, ghost stories, and calculated deception, asking what happens when communities outsource their pain to a single scapegoat. At its core, this is a feminist fable about agency, collective action, and the dangerous power of the stories people tell to survive—stories that may, in the end, be rewritten by the ones they tried to silence.
