Description
This sweeping, multigenerational saga chronicles the extraordinary journey of a Greek family from their ancestral village to the bustling streets of Detroit. At its heart lies the story of Cal Stephanides, an intersex individual whose life unfolds across a complex tapestry of identities, challenging the very definitions of gender and belonging. The novel masterfully explores themes of genetic inheritance, cultural assimilation, and the search for self within the liminal spaces between worlds. Eugenides weaves a rich narrative that is both deeply personal and universally resonant, offering a profound meditation on what it means to be human.

I started reading Middlesex with such enthusiasm; I really wanted to love this book but I just didn't enjoy it. I understand the importance of exploring the history of the protagonist - Calliope Stephanides - but I felt there were huge chunks of narrative (covering eight decades) that simply weren't important in the end. Thanks to a rare genetic mutation Calliope isn't what she seems and it takes forever for her discover her true identity.. so long in fact that I grew bored by the end of this +500 page trek through one family's twisted history.
