Description
In a remote Cape Verdean village called Serrano, a woman who wanders the roads is dismissed as “mad”—until her words begin to sound like prophecy. When a mysterious girl falls from the sky and is taken in by Jeronimo, their lives intertwine across years and distances, shaping Filipa’s path from rural wonder to urban ambition. As Filipa grows into a successful businesswoman, her memories of Serrano—and her bond with the madwoman—return with unsettling clarity, especially when the village’s future is threatened by plans to build a dam. Blending magical realism with a sharp exploration of female empowerment, marginalization, and the cost of progress, this debut novel by Dina Salústio traces how wisdom can be silenced, then reclaimed, and how love and identity endure beyond exile.
