Description
A young Nigerian girl, Adah, grows up under the weight of gendered expectations and the quiet erasures that come with being treated as less than—denied schooling, recorded only partially by her family, and measured against the promise of her brother’s future. When she reunites with her husband in England, her hopes for education and opportunity collide with the realities of racism, economic precarity, and the humiliations of being labeled “second class” in a new country. Through Adah’s resilience and hard-won self-determination, the novel explores how patriarchy, colonial legacies, and migration reshape identity and belonging. Buchi Emecheta’s clear-eyed, emotionally forceful storytelling turns Adah’s personal struggle into a broader, urgent portrait of dignity, agency, and survival.
