Description
In Anita Desai's poignant novel, a retired widow named Nanda Kaul seeks solace and solitude in the remote colonial house of Carignano. Her carefully constructed peace is disrupted by the arrival of her great-granddaughter, Raka, a child who embodies a wild, untamed spirit. As Nanda confronts her past and the generational chasm between them, a palpable tension builds, mirroring the titular "fire on the mountain." Desai masterfully explores themes of alienation, memory, and the quiet violence that can simmer beneath the surface of human connection.
