Description

Kim Jiyoung, born in 1982, is an ordinary woman living an ordinary life in South Korea—until she begins exhibiting strange symptoms that blur the line between psychological distress and something far more unsettling. Through fragmented memories and clinical observations, we trace her journey from childhood through adulthood, witnessing the accumulated weight of gender discrimination, societal expectations, and systemic inequality that have shaped her existence. Cho Nam-Joo's groundbreaking debut novel is a searing examination of what it means to be a woman in contemporary South Korea, where even the most mundane moments reveal the pervasive nature of sexism. With unflinching honesty and quiet power, the narrative exposes how individual trauma is inseparable from collective social structures, making this intimate portrait a profound commentary on gender, identity, and the cost of conformity. A haunting and essential read that sparked national conversation, this novel challenges readers to confront uncomfortable truths about the world we inhabit.
