Description
Twenty-eight years after fleeing Cleveland’s Denton Street, Phoebe Shaw returns to visit her ailing mother—and to confront the disturbing memories she has spent decades trying to escape. Her homecoming revives the mystery of what happened to the neighborhood girls who once began transforming in grotesque, metallic ways, their bodies reflecting the industrial ruin spreading through the community. Moving between Phoebe’s troubled adolescence and her uneasy return to the present, the novel explores friendship, trauma, class, environmental devastation, and the corrosion of the American dream. Lyrical, unsettling, and sharply atmospheric, it is a powerful story of girlhood and the communities that shape—and sometimes deform—their children.
