Description

This astonishing debut novel plunges into the complex inner world of Ada, a young woman whose body becomes a battleground for warring deities. Born in Nigeria and later navigating life in the United States, Ada grapples with an identity fractured by the gods who inhabit her, blurring the lines between self and other. Through lyrical prose and a unique narrative structure that incorporates journal entries and autobiographical elements, the novel explores themes of heritage, mental health, and the very nature of consciousness. Akwaeke Emezi masterfully crafts a story that challenges conventional notions of reality, inviting readers to consider a different lens through which to view the self.

the ada's life is a shakespearean tragedy and i am the whole gallery in the theater watching her take a final bow as the ọgbanje try drag her feet out from under her. i watch from every angle as the world tries to unmake her and then i stay for the encore where the ada remakes themself as a whole being.
