In postwar Los Angeles, Aki Ito returns with her family to a city—and a Japanese American community—still struggling to rebuild after wartime incarceration. Working as a nurse’s aide at the Japanese Hospital in Boyle Heights, Aki becomes concerned when an elderly patient arrives with suspicious injuries, drawing her toward a troubled family and a shocking murder in Little Tokyo. As suspicion closes in around someone close to her, Aki must confront buried secrets while navigating questions of loyalty, justice, and survival. Rich in historical detail and emotional nuance, this compelling mystery explores resilience, community, and the lasting scars of displacement.
