Birchbark House

Louise Erdrich

Step into the world of seven-year-old Omakayas, a young Anishinabe girl living on an island in Lake Superior in 1847. Over the course of one year, Omakayas and her family navigate the joys and sorrows of life, from building their unique birchbark home to facing a devastating smallpox epidemic. Guided by her wise grandmother, Nokomis, Omakayas learns the traditional ways of her people and begins to understand her own connection to the spirits of nature. This poignant story explores themes of family, resilience, grief, and the enduring strength of Indigenous culture.
