Calder and Behrens

Michael Gilbert

In this sharp, suspenseful collection, Michael Gilbert follows Calder and Behrens—two unassuming counter-intelligence agents whose quiet competence proves more dangerous than any grand weapon. Across a dozen post-war and Cold War stories, ordinary people stumble into extraordinary secrets, and the agents must navigate deception, surveillance, and moral ambiguity with precision rather than spectacle. From a woodsman uncovering a WWII secret to a string of escalating international intrigues, each case reveals how intelligence work turns everyday details into leverage. With Gilbert’s hallmark blend of crisp plotting and understated wit, these stories explore themes of trust, risk, and the thin line between order and chaos—where there are no rules, only consequences.
