Buchi Emecheta

Set on the campus of a Nigerian university, this novel follows Nko and Ete Kamba as their young love is tested by the competing pressures of tradition and modern education. When Nko’s ambition to learn—and to define herself beyond marriage—collides with the rigid expectations around her, their relationship becomes a battleground for dignity, agency, and belonging. Through the rhythms of student life and the intimate stakes of a household, the story explores how “double standards” shape both women’s and men’s choices, often in ways that feel impossible to reconcile. With her incisive, socially alert storytelling, Buchi Emecheta delivers a candid, feminist examination of power, hypocrisy, and the difficult work of becoming oneself.
