Ibis Trilogy

Amitav Ghosh

Set against the backdrop of the Opium Wars, this sweeping historical novel chronicles the tumultuous voyage of The Ibis, a repurposed slaving ship carrying a diverse cargo of souls across the Indian Ocean. Fate has gathered an unlikely assembly of characters—from a disgraced Raja and a widowed villager to an opium trader and a freedman—each shedding their past identities to forge new bonds as ship-brothers. As their journeys intertwine, they embark on a path that will span continents, races, and generations, exploring the complex colonial history of the East. Through lush descriptions of poppy fields, high seas, and exotic locales, the narrative captures the vibrant tapestry of human experience amidst profound historical upheaval.
