The Light We Lost

Jill Santopolo

Lucy and Gabe meet as idealistic Columbia University seniors and instantly recognize something profound in each other—a shared desire to live meaningfully and make their mark on the world. When they reconnect a year later, their connection feels destined, but life has other plans: Gabe pursues photojournalism in the Middle East while Lucy builds a career in New York, setting them on diverging paths across continents. Over thirteen years, their relationship becomes a poignant exploration of love, ambition, sacrifice, and the choices that define us—testing whether some connections transcend distance and time. Santopolo weaves a devastating and deeply romantic narrative about the enduring power of first love, asking whether we're guided by fate or by the decisions we make. With an unforgettable twist ending, this debut novel captures the bittersweet reality that the person who changes us most may not be the one we end up with.
