Medicus investigation

Ruth Downie

Medicus Gaius Petreius Ruso and his wife, Tilla, return to the unsettled frontier of Roman Britain, where they help care for the men building Hadrian’s Wall. Beneath the monumental project, resentment simmers among Britons displaced from their land, while the disappearance of Ruso’s new clerk—and then a local boy—threatens to ignite old tensions. Their search draws them into a dangerous mystery of slavery, assumed identities, and the shadowy world of fur trappers. Blending wry historical detail, vivid setting, and an engaging investigation, the novel explores power, cultural conflict, and the fragile boundaries between Roman and British life.
