The Mimicking of Known Successes
Malka Older
On a remote Jupiterian outpost shrouded in gas, a man vanishes, drawing enigmatic Investigator Mossa to Valdegeld—a university colony where she unexpectedly reunites with Pleiti, her former girlfriend and a brilliant scholar devoted to Earth's ecological restoration. As Mossa requests Pleiti's help unraveling the mystery, the two navigate a twisting investigation that intertwines personal longing with cosmic stakes, where the fate of humanity's return to Earth hangs in the balance. Blending the intellectual puzzle-solving of classic detective fiction with the warmth of sapphic romance, this Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Award-nominated novella offers both comfort and adventure—a cozy mystery that reaches toward the stars. Malka Older crafts a story that proves science fiction can be simultaneously intimate and expansive, delivering the kind of fist-pumping triumph that lingers long after the final page.
