Moties

Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle

Humanity’s sprawling interstellar empire reaches out to an alien civilization from the Mote—an isolated, dust-shrouded star system—only to find a welcome that comes with unsettling evasiveness. As first contact unfolds, the Moties’ long history and apparent sophistication collide with a mystery at the heart of their world, drawing both species into a tense dance of diplomacy, misdirection, and survival. Blending hard science fiction with political intrigue and philosophical unease, the novel asks what intelligence truly means when communication fails and when the stakes are existential. With Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle’s signature blend of rigorous worldbuilding and L.J. Ganser’s narrative momentum, this landmark story explores the costs of civilization—and the danger of assuming you understand the other side.
