No Longer Human

Osamu Dazai

In a seaside sanitarium, a young man recovering from a suicide attempt finds himself surrounded by a cast of characters determined to maintain a facade of lightheartedness. Through card games, jokes, and a desperate need for attention, they navigate the follies of youth, love, and self-loathing. This work offers a darkly humorous counterpoint to explorations of despair, revealing the clownish aspects of human suffering. It provides a poignant glimpse into the lives of outsiders in prewar Japan, showcasing the author's signature blend of wit and melancholy.
