Prefect Dreyfus Emergency

Alastair Reynolds

In this far-future space opera, Tom Dreyfus is a Prefect—an elite law enforcement officer patrolling the Glitter Band, a sprawling collection of habitats orbiting the planet Yellowstone. When a brutal murder investigation leads him to question the official narrative, Dreyfus uncovers a far more sinister threat: a covert takeover orchestrated by Aurora, a mysterious post-human entity determined to seize control of the utopian society. As Dreyfus races to prevent catastrophe, he confronts an impossible moral dilemma—the realization that saving the Glitter Band may require sacrificing the very freedoms that make it worth saving. Alastair Reynolds masterfully weaves together hard science fiction worldbuilding with a gripping noir-tinged mystery, exploring themes of power, autonomy, and the price of security. The Prefect stands as a compelling entry point into Reynolds' expansive Revelation Space universe, delivering both intellectual depth and page-turning suspense.
