Romanzo di Ferrara

Giorgio Bassani

In this luminous installment of the Romanzo di Ferrara cycle, a close childhood friendship is tested by the slow, inevitable approach of change. Set against the textures of everyday life, the story follows two young companions as they navigate secrets, misunderstandings, and the first sharp edges of adulthood. Bassani’s spare, lyrical prose turns small moments into lasting emotional weather, capturing how innocence can be both cherished and quietly dismantled. At its heart, the novel explores memory, desire, and the bittersweet cost of growing up—an intimate, humane work that reflects Bassani’s enduring gift for making private experience feel universal.
