The Saga of Recluce

L. E. Modesitt, Jr.

In this epic fantasy debut, L.E. Modesitt Jr. introduces readers to Lerris, a young man from the ordered realm of Recluce who must choose between exile and the dangergeld—a perilous journey into the chaotic lands beyond his homeland to discover his true purpose and power. Faced with the choice to either accept permanent banishment or undertake a dangerous wanderjahr where many do not survive, Lerris discovers an unexpected talent for magic during his preparation and must learn to harness the power of Order to survive in a world ruled by the devastating forces of Chaos. Guided by a mysterious gray magician and driven by an intellectual quest for knowledge, Lerris embarks on a transformative adventure across strange lands and through the ruins of ancient civilizations, where he confronts the fundamental conflict between Order and Chaos. Modesitt's carefully-plotted narrative combines richly-rationalized magic systems with genuine moral complexity, delivering a character-driven tale that explores what it truly means to choose good over evil and to find one's place in the world. The Magic of Recluce stands as a landmark achievement in contemporary fantasy, launching an epic saga that established Modesitt as a master of the genre.
