After entering high school, the clever but self-effacing Jūgorō Kobato and the sharp-eyed Yuki Osanai make a pact to live as ordinary, unassuming students. Their quiet plans are disrupted by a series of seemingly minor incidents, including the disappearance of a coveted strawberry tart, that reveal hidden motives and unexpected connections. As the pair applies their formidable reasoning skills to everyday mysteries, they must balance their desire for a peaceful life against the irresistible pull of a puzzle. Witty, atmospheric, and gently suspenseful, this coming-of-age mystery explores friendship, identity, and the difference between observing the world and intervening in it.
