Cecil Louis Troughton Smith, known by his pen name C. S. Forester, was an English novelist who wrote tales of naval warfare. He was best known for the Horatio Hornblower series, which follows a Royal Navy officer through the Napoleonic Wars, and two of its novels, A Ship of the Line and Flying Colours, shared the 1938 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction. His other books The African Queen and The Good Shepherd were both adapted into films. He died in Fullerton, California, in 1966.
