Elfriede Jelinek is an Austrian playwright and novelist, born in 1946, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2004. She is considered among the most important living playwrights writing in German. Her fiction includes Greed, a thriller-tinged story about a country policeman drawn into a dangerous web of desire after a dead girl is found in a lake, along with The Piano Teacher, Lust, Women as Lovers and Wonderful, Wonderful Times, which carry a satirical edge.
