Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821–1881) was a Russian novelist, short-story writer, essayist and journalist who wrote about the human condition in 19th-century Russia. He is best known for Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, Demons and The Brothers Karamazov, and his Notes from Underground is often counted among the first works of existentialist literature. Before those novels he wrote Poor Folk, and after four years in a Siberian labour camp he drew on that experience for The House of the Dead.
