Writing under that name, she is best known for seven novels, among them Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, Romola, Felix Holt, the Radical, Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda. Her novels, mostly set in provincial England, are known for their realism and psychological insight, and Middlemarch follows a fictional town in the years before the 1832 Reform Bill.
