Description
Set in the fictional English town of Middlemarch during the turbulent years before the 1832 Reform Bill, this sweeping novel offers a profound examination of life in a provincial community. Through a rich tapestry of interconnected lives, George Eliot masterfully explores themes of idealism, ambition, marriage, and the constraints of society. The narrative follows a diverse cast of characters, from the earnest Dorothea Brooke and the ambitious Dr. Lydgate to the charming Will Ladislaw and the pragmatic Mary Garth, each grappling with their personal aspirations and the moral complexities of their time. Eliot's keen insight into human nature and her intricate, realistic portrayal of social dynamics make Middlemarch a timeless masterpiece of English literature.

I have never been a huge fan of Victorian authors, even when I love the stories, I have always found them hard to read. This was a complete surprise! It was easier to read and felt pretty contemporary. At last I’ve found a Victorian author with a sense of humour!
