George Orwell was the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair, an English novelist, essayist and journalist who died in 1950. He is best known for the novella Animal Farm (1945) and the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). His non-fiction includes The Road to Wigan Pier (1937), which draws on his time among working-class people in northern England, and Homage to Catalonia (1938), an account of his years soldiering for the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War. Words he coined, such as Big Brother and doublethink, have passed into everyday English.
