Herman Melville was an American writer of the American Renaissance, best known for the novel Moby-Dick (1851) and the novella Billy Budd, Sailor, which was published after his death. His early travel books, Typee (1846) and Omoo (1847), drew on his encounters in Polynesia, and later works such as Pierre, Bartleby the Scrivener, and White-Jacket followed. He then turned to poetry, including Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War, and he died in 1891.
