James Graham Ballard was an English novelist and short-story writer known for fiction about psychology, technology, sex and mass media. He first drew notice with post-apocalyptic science fiction such as The Drowned World, and later courted controversy with the story collection The Atrocity Exhibition and the novel Crash. His 1984 war novel Empire of the Sun won broad critical recognition and drew on his own childhood in Shanghai under Japanese occupation. Ballard died in 2009, and his books include High-Rise and Concrete Island.
