M. F. K. Fisher was the pen name of Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher Parrish Friede, an American food writer and founder of the Napa Valley Wine Library. She wrote 27 books, including Consider the Oyster, How to Cook a Wolf and The Gastronomical Me, and saw eating well as one of life's arts. Her memoir Among Friends recalls childhood in Michigan and Whittier, California. She died in 1992, and W. H. Auden remarked that no one in the United States wrote better prose.
