Herbert Marshall McLuhan (1911–1980) was a Canadian philosopher whose work is among the cornerstones of media theory, and he is often called the father of media studies. He taught English at several universities in the United States and Canada before joining the University of Toronto in 1946, and he coined the phrase "the medium is the message" in Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man. The Medium Is the Massage is a visually playful look at how television, print and advertising reshape the way people perceive the world.
