Alexandre Biyidi Awala, known as Mongo Beti, was a Cameroonian author and polemicist who spent much of his life in France, where he studied at the Sorbonne and taught at the Lycée Pierre Corneille. His fiction includes Mission to Kala, a satirical novel about a young man sent to a remote village, along with Perpetua and the Habit of Unhappiness, Remember Ruben and The Poor Christ of Bomba. Born in 1932 and dying in 2001, he was called one of the most perceptive French-African writers on African life.
