Naguib Mahfouz was an Egyptian writer whose career ran from the 1930s until 2004, and every one of his novels is set in Egypt. He is best known for The Cairo Trilogy and Children of Gebelawi, and in 1988 he won the Nobel Prize in Literature, the only Egyptian to do so. Over those decades he wrote 35 novels and more than 350 short stories, and many of his works have been adapted into films.
