Description
In this atmospheric novel, Naguib Mahfouz masterfully captures the ennui and rootlessness of Egypt's cosmopolitan middle class. Anis Zani, a disillusioned civil servant, finds solace in nightly gatherings on his Nile houseboat, where he and his cynical friends escape reality through shared rituals. The arrival of a young, earnest journalist disrupts their carefully constructed world, setting in motion a chain of events that unravels their fragile existence. This poignant exploration of aimlessness and disillusionment culminates in a fateful journey that underscores the tragic consequences of their detachment.
