Nuruddin Farah is a Somali novelist whose first novel, From a Crooked Rib, was published in 1970. He has also written plays for stage and radio, along with short stories and essays, and since leaving Somalia in the 1970s he has lived and taught in countries including the United States, Britain, Sweden and India. His novels include Maps, the first of the Blood in the Sun books, and Sweet and Sour Milk. He won the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in 1998 and is a perennial Nobel Prize in Literature nominee.
