Description
In this novel, Deeriye—an elderly man worn down by asthma—spends a few fragile days in the care of his son, Mursal, while the weight of his past presses in from every direction. As his life unfolds in intimate, day-to-day moments, the story expands into a wider reckoning with power: the coercions justified by Islamic law and the brutalities carried out in the name of Socialism. Through Deeriye’s memories and the tensions around him, the book interrogates how authority can harden into tyranny, stripping individuals of dignity, choice, and voice. With Nuruddin Farah’s incisive, socially charged style, the novel becomes both a personal portrait and a moral indictment of systems that claim legitimacy while inflicting harm.
