R. K. Narayan, born Rasipuram Krishnaswami Narayanaswami in 1906, was an Indian writer and novelist known for work set in the fictional South Indian town of Malgudi. His books include Malgudi Days, a collection of short stories, along with The Guide, The Vendor of Sweets and Waiting for the Mahatma. He was counted among the leading early Indian writers in English, and in 1994 he received the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship. Narayan died in 2001.
