Description
King Jorg Ancrath has seized the throne through cunning and brutality, but now must defend his crown against overwhelming odds as twenty thousand soldiers march toward his castle gates. Haunted by the ghosts of his past—both literal and psychological—and driven by a consuming need for vengeance, Jorg struggles to hold power while battling the demons of his own making and the trauma inflicted upon him as a child. When he discovers ancient artifacts hidden beneath his castle, he glimpses the possibility of wielding forces beyond conventional warfare, though their true nature and cost remain shrouded in mystery. Mark Lawrence crafts a dark, visceral tale of a young king whose ruthlessness and cunning are tested against an enemy far more powerful, forcing him to confront whether the price of his ambitions has already destroyed the man he might have become. A gripping exploration of power, revenge, and the corrupting nature of violence, this is a fantasy that refuses to shy away from the moral complexities of its morally compromised protagonist.
