Description

In an unnamed African country, a young Muslim man’s hunger for education collides with the limits of family, class, and circumstance. As he comes of age, he reaches toward opportunity—seeking help from a wealthy uncle in Nairobi—only to find that promises can be as fragile as they are persuasive. Forced to navigate hardship, disappointment, and the pull of a wider world, he ultimately departs aboard a cargo ship, carrying with him the memories that shaped his choices. With its intimate, realist storytelling and Gurnah’s early-career clarity, the novel explores migration, moral endurance, and the enduring tension between aspiration and survival.
