Abdulrazak Gurnah is a Tanzanian-born British novelist and academic whose novels include Paradise, By the Sea and Desertion, works concerned with colonialism and refugees. Born in the Sultanate of Zanzibar, he moved to the United Kingdom in the 1960s as a refugee during the Zanzibar Revolution. He was awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature and is Emeritus Professor of English and Postcolonial Literatures at the University of Kent. His other titles include Afterlives, Gravel Heart and Admiring Silence.
