"Socialism Is Great!": A Worker's Memoir of the New China
by Lijia Zhang
Description
This candid memoir follows a young woman’s coming-of-age inside the factories and political campaigns of Maoist China, where revolutionary slogans shape every aspect of daily life. As she encounters the contradictions between official ideals and workers’ lived realities, she begins to question the system she was taught to revere. Set against China’s dramatic social and economic transformation, the book explores identity, political awakening, gender, ambition, and the search for personal freedom. Witty, observant, and deeply personal, it offers an intimate perspective on a pivotal era in modern Chinese history.
