Description

After the death of her mother, Lucilla Marjoribanks returns to her provincial home determined to care for her widowed father and to become, in her own words, “the sunshine of his life.” With warmth, tact, and a sharp eye for human nature, she sets her sights on reshaping the social life of Carlingford—turning drawing rooms, conversations, and community rituals into the battlegrounds of her good-humored ambition. As Lucilla navigates family expectations, local rivalries, and the shifting currents of respectability, her schemes reveal how power often operates through manners, matchmaking, and influence. Margaret Oliphant’s lively, observant storytelling blends comedy with social insight, offering a vivid portrait of Victorian life where character and community are constantly in negotiation.
