Description

In the fading upstate New York town of Mohawk, where shuttered factories and old grudges shape daily life, Dallas Younger drifts through taverns and poker games while his ex-wife, Anne, struggles with family obligations and an uncertain future. As their lives remain entangled with the town’s troubled families and deeply rooted prejudices, personal disappointments reveal the larger forces keeping the community stuck in place. With compassion and wry insight, the novel explores loyalty, class, marriage, family, and the difficulty of escaping the identities a small town assigns its people. It is a sharply observed portrait of working-class America and an assured early work from a major chronicler of ordinary lives.
