Description

In the shadow of World War II, fifteen teenage boys from a reformatory are evacuated to a remote mountain village, only to find themselves abandoned when plague strikes and the villagers flee. Left to their own devices, these youths embark on a desperate, fleeting experiment in self-governance, seeking to forge lives of dignity, love, and courage amidst escalating chaos. Their fragile utopia, however, is ultimately tested by the encroaching horrors of war and the stark realities of mortality. Kenzaburo Oe masterfully explores themes of moral responsibility, the loss of innocence, and the struggle for humanity in the face of societal collapse.
