Kenzaburo Oe was a Japanese writer, born Kenzaburō Ōe, whose novels, short stories and essays were strongly shaped by French and American literature and dealt with nuclear weapons, nuclear power and existentialism. He was awarded the 1994 Nobel Prize in Literature, and his books include A Quiet Life, Death by Water, Somersault and The Pinch Runner Memorandum. Oe died in 2023 and is remembered as a major figure in contemporary Japanese literature.
