Description
In a decaying house shaped by secrecy and fear, Evelyn Axon keeps her disabled adult daughter, Muriel, isolated from the outside world while an increasingly intrusive neighborhood watches and intervenes. Nearby, the troubled young Isabel struggles with an unstable home life, an aging father who wanders the streets, and a lover whose presence brings further complications. Through parallel stories of fractured families, social neglect, and uneasy dependencies, the novel exposes the disturbing ways love, control, and responsibility can become entangled. Darkly comic and psychologically incisive, it marks an early example of Hilary Mantel’s distinctive exploration of marginalized lives and unsettling domestic worlds.
